WELCOME TO THE WIKI OF DAVID HOLLOWAY, BOOKSELLER
I have been buying and selling first editions, collectible books, and the occasional oddity for over twenty years now, and I get great pleasure from providing the right book to the right person. I'd love to hear about your book interests. I concentrate on 20th century literature, art books, and books by and about the African-American experience.
I'll be using this quick page to offer book news-- links, reviews, and thoughts on book collecting and reading and also to list the book of the week.
BOOK NEWS
BOOK OF THE WEEK -- First Edition of a Classic book on Japanese Culture.
The Book of Tea:
Okakura-Kakuzo. (Tenshin) THE BOOK OF TEA. New York: Duffield, 1906. 160 pages. First Edition, first printing of this perrenial classic.
In addition to a detailed history of tea culture this book represents an attempt to explain Japanese history, philosophy and aesthetics to the Western audience. Chapters include The Cup of Humanity, The Tea Room, Schools of Tea, Taoism and Zennism, Flowers, and Tea-Masters.
The author was one of the founders of the Japanese Fine Arts Academy, and served as curator of Japanese and Chinese art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He coined the term Teaism in this book, and introduced Americans to the famous Japanese Tea Ceremony.
Almost one hundred years later the book is still in print, and is considered a classic in the fields of gastronomy, anthropology, and philosophy.
The first printing is uncommon.
One tiny hole (size of a match head) to front hinge, minor wear to head and foot of spine, else very good or better. Unobtrusive owner's name in pencil on front pastedown.
Clean, bright and attractive with sound hinges with pages still creamy and clean.
